What is a VIN number?
Vehicle Identification Number stands for "VIN". This vin number is a universal serial number provided to every car by the vehicle manufacturer. Within the 17-digit number are different codes that indicate the car's make and model, a serial number, where the vehicle was manufactured, and even information about optional add-ons such as a sun roof.

VIN Check Warnings

When buying a previously owned car, there are many ways for you to get a bad deal from both a dealer and a private seller.

Odometers may be rolled back thousands of miles. It is against the law in most states, but it is easy to do. It is still a major problem in used cars today.

Be wary if the previous owner will not or cannot show you the past repair records or identity of any former owners. If the title seems suspicious, go somewhere else.

If an auto is shipped from out-of-state or received in trade from another dealer.

Fires - There are many reason that can cause a car to catch on fire. The water used to put out even a small fire can get into the engine and interior. Many times the car has to have windows replaced and be repainted. Fire can damage important hoses and mechanical parts. All this information is stored under VIN numbers.

Rentals - Imagine buying another car and then finding out that it had been driven by hundreds of people through a rental company? It's hard to image a car like this having much value, but rental vehicles are often sold for the same price as other vehicles. Rental vehicles are proven problem vehicles that typically have a much shorter life span than vehicles with identical miles. A car history report from vin numbers can identify vehicles owned by major rental companies.

Lemons - A lemon is a car that the auto manufacturer has stated has a known problem, or is one of the few vehicles that just never worked right. A vin numbers database report will let you know if the car was a manufacturer buyback (lemon) and how many vin records if any are contained in a complete vin number search. Lemons are your worse nightmare, and you'll be surprised at the numbers there are circulating around the used car lots.

Odometer Fraud - Odometer rollback is a common scam. This can cause you to spend thousands more than a car is worth. A car can appear to be a low number mileage car, when it in fact could have 100,000 more miles than indicated on the odometer. Cars vin numbers along with their history report is the only way to protect you from this type of fraud. Be sure to study the car vin history report and mileage reports for any suspicious activity.

Salvaged - A car vin history report can report major accident damage. A VIN Number Check will identify when a car has been totaled or even had a minor fender bender. A car will often receive a salvage or junk notation on the title from various states. This is typically called a salvage title - and it's more common than you think. Thank goodness for VIN numbers.

Flooded - Floods can occur in less than an hour, totally submerging a car or truck. Rust from floods near oceans can cause rust that can severely compromise the safety of a car. Water can get into the engine and transmission. Floods can also ruin the interior, causing mold to grow that you cannot see. Insurance companies must report these vehicles, however resellers can edit the vin title and cause you to spend your hard earned money on a lemon. Researching VIN numbers will uncover flood damage that has been reported to an insurance company.

Get reliable, accurate information on a used car:

Major insurance companies mandate that their insurance claims administrators report data on major damage, which is then included in car vin reports. Many major auto auctions contribute to the data, associated with vin numbers and vehicle history reports.

Consumer Protection Agencies report on major recalls and auto buybacks from manufacturers. This lemon buyback data is not contained in a vehicle identification number search (VIN). Both New and Used Auto Dealers also are solicited for data which is contained in vin reports.

State Departments of Motor Vehicles contribute information, which is contained in vehicle history reports. Canadian Motor Vehicle Departments contribute information contained in vin history reports. In addition to the Department of Motor Vehicles occasionally other state agencies provide data to the companies who compile vin number reports. All data acquired from these number of sources and compiled into the vehicle report meets either the federally mandated industry guidelines.
